The Hanbury Manor course is widely recognised as a top course in Britain. PGA standard, and three-time venue for the English Open, the Hanbury Course was first built around the family home in 1890. Since then the original Harry Vardon Course has been redesigned by Jack Nicklaus II.

The two nines are different. The first nine is much more open with plenty of water hazards. The second contrast this with a more traditional park-like feel, with mature trees, small lakes, good bunkers and challenging last holes. The toughest hole is apparently the ninth with a review saying: “Scoring well on this demanding course is easier said than done. The 8th hole is the toughest on the course, measuring 425 yards with out-of-bounds all the way along the right hand side. The approach shot to the green is tricky, even from the middle of the fairway. The green is elevated and protected by a lake on the left and a grassy hollow to the right, the ground and the green slope cruelly towards the lake.” Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

The golf course is kept in immaculate condition. The course is as good as it has ever been and a recent player who played mid December last year had this to say: “Managed to play in a corporate in May 2006 and it has been about five years since I last played here. I can safely say that the course has improved and matured enormously in that time. Right now the course is in tip top condition, a real pleasure to play. The rough is up and the fairways are immaculately defined – My feeling is that the course is probably in as good a nick as it ever has been – the members that I spoke to think so too. If you can get a round here – look forward to it.”
